Lavendula angustifolia: Lavender is a perennial flowering shrub native to northern Africa and the Mediterranean region, with a history dating back more than 2,500 years. It has been used by ancient civilizations such as the Phoenicians, Arabians and Egyptians for perfumes and mummification. The Greeks, Romans and Persians added it to their bathwater to wash and help purify their skin. Some of the earliest recorded uses of lavender are by the Roman soldiers who used the wild-growing plant to perfume their bathwater and wash their clothes; Because of the association with clothes-washing, medieval English washerwomen were referred to as lavenders.

Some of the common uses of lavender include treating hair loss, digestion, circulation, respiratory ailments (specifically helpful with it's expectorant ability) and most commonly skin disorders, due to its anti-inflammatory effects and ability to scavenge free radicals. It is also commonly used to alleviate discomfort from bug bites, stings and even burns.

Studies show interesting applications for lavender for memory, mood, and overall cognitive function. Just the odor of lavender seemed to help various test groups stay relaxed and focused when asked to do various stressful tasks, or improved their ability to recover feelings of wellbeing after exposure to stress.

Magically, Lavender is masculine in action and associated with Mercury in Culpeper's Herbal [2]. It is also associated with the element of air and the astrological sign Virgo.
It may be used as an asperging herb and dried lavender sticks or wands can be burnt like incense.
It is also useful in spells to sharpen the mind, to encourage or strengthen pure love and to encourage fertility.
There are seemingly endless applications for lavender from skin care, teas (we like equal parts lavender and peppermint for a soothing tea), cooking, baking (lavender vanilla shortbread is one of our favourites!), to baths, crafts and much more.

Our lavender is a combination of our own cultivated lavender mixed with french lavender.
