The humble plantain major L. aka Plantain, pops up literally everywhere and is a weed as common as it gets...But not so commonly known is that it can be eaten raw in salads, made into a tea or used medicinally. In fact, before plantain was slumming it on your lawn or in cracks in the pavement, this plant was revered by many cultures, the Saxons even considered it one of their nine sacred herbs.
It also has a bit of a reputation as an an aphrodisiac...It is widely used in herbal medicine to support upper respiratory health and topically for minor cuts, bruises and stings. (Chew up a leaf and stick it on a wasp sting in a pinch for example). If you want vitamins A and C as well as a good dose of calcium, eat the stems and leaves. Cook as you would any leafy green or chop into a salad, the younger the plant, the less bitter the taste.

Plantain has long been linked with Orcus, King of the Dead, it plays a powerful role in the supernatural the vanquisher of deadly diseases, arising from the underworld. In Germany he is called “ Wegercih, Ruler of the Way”. This is because he controls the path leading to the realm of the dead.
Plantain is used magically in healing baths, toss a pinch or two in the flame of a candle or throw to the East wind in healing wishes.
Plantain is brewed as a tea for divination and vivid dreams, and it is considered a protection herb when placed in a charm around the neck of a child. For healing and purification, place fresh or dried Plantain leaves or roots in a mesh bag hung under the faucet for bathwater.

Plantain is very high in vitamins A and C and in calcium. Plantains have wide-ranging antimicrobial properties besides being anti-inflammatory and analgesic. It can not only soothe insect bites and superficial wounds but prevent infections and accelerate healing. An active biochemical aucubin is mainly responsible for the antimicrobial action of the herb. Another substance allantoin in the herb helps with skin tissue regeneration.

Plantains also have an astringent property that has a cleansing effect on the body. It helps dry up excess secretions in the respiratory tract and the digestive system, thus being useful in treating colds and diarrhea. The astringency is moderated by the demulcent effect of the mucilage in the herb, so this herbal remedy is much gentler than other commonly used astringents.
Our plantain is a combination of domestic and ethically wild crafted from British Columbia.
